Home Remedies for Acne

by Julie McMurchie
Acne occurs when an excess of sebum, our skin's natural moisturizer,
gets clogged in follicle canals and skin pores, resulting in blackheads
and whiteheads. Left untreated, these clogged pores can become
infected. When this happens, the body sends white blood cells to the
area to fight the infection, which causes the redness and swelling
associated with acne.

The first and best home remedy for acne is to wash your face daily, and
after exercise. Clean skin is crucial to controlling acne. Be gentle, don't
scrub too hard and pat your face dry.

Second, drink water. Water flushes impurities out of your system.

Third, exercise everyday. Sweating removes impurities from your skin.
Make sure after your workout that you wash your face.

What to Do When You Breakout

Popping zits can actually worsen and deepen the infection in your skin,
so resist the urge to squeeze.

Toothpaste applied directly to a blemish can help it dry up. Dab a little
on, and leave it for at least 20 minutes, but overnight if you can.

Honey has natural antibacterial properties that will fight infection in your
skin, and leave it smooth and soft. Dab it on a blemish and leave it
overnight, or use it as a facial mask. (See
How to Take Care of Your
Skin.)

Baking Soda paste made with regular baking soda and a little water is
also very helpful. Make the paste, and apply to your face with gentle,
circular motions, leave on for four minutes then rinse with cool water.

Apple Cider Vinegar's natural antibacterial properties make it an
excellent skin toner for after washing. The odor is fairly strong, but fades
after a few minutes.

Tea Tree Oil, with its natural antibacterial properties will also help your
body fight an acne infection and reduce inflammation. Apply with a cotton
ball before you go to bed, and wash off the next morning.
